Established in 1998 in Potsdam, the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) is unique in the German academic landscape. Academically structured as an independent Faculty of Digital Engineering at the University of Potsdam, HPI combines excellent research and teaching with the advantages of a privately financed institute and a tuition-free study program.
With its unique innovation- and practice-oriented Bachelor and Master of Science degree programs in Digital Engineering, it advances research and education in IT systems engineering, data engineering, cyber security, entrepreneurship, and digital health.
HPI’s research is renowned for its high standard of excellence. In addition, HPI concentrates on the development and research of user-oriented innovations for all areas of life.
PhD candidates carry out research at the HPI Research Schools in Potsdam and its branches in Cape Town, Haifa, Irvine, and Nanjing. With twenty-two professors, 50 guest professors and lecturers, and more than 700 students in 2022, HPI has become Germany’s university-based center of excellence for digital engineering.

HPI Digital Health Cluster
The HPI Digital Health Cluster brings together individuals from health sciences, human sciences, data sciences, digital engineering, and society with the shared goal of improving health and well-being. In the cluster, patient-centered and data-driven methods and processes are investigated in interdisciplinary research to advance digital technologies in medicine and healthcare. In March 2019, the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai (HPI•MS) was formed as the result of a cooperation agreement between the Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) in New York City and the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI). With HPI•MS, both institutions aim to develop digital health solutions that empower patients and healthcare providers while improving health and health outcomes. With world-class expertise and complementary resources in healthcare, data sciences, and biomedical and digital engineering, the new HPI•MS brings together experts with combined excellence in healthcare delivery, health sciences, biomedical and digital engineering, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to develop digital products with real-time predictive and preventive capabilities.
