Embark in Knowledge

To support the development of South African youth, the Hasso Plattner Foundation supports youth education, science, and health care activities through the Embark in Knowledge entity.

Inkcubeko Youth and Science Center

The youth in South Africa are facing several endemic societal challenges. With its initiatives, the Inkcubeko Youth and Science Center aims to break the cycle of poverty and enable young people in Thembalethu, George, based in the Western Cape of South Africa, to shape their future with confidence.

Through its activities, Inkcubeko aims to increase youth’s interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and innovation (STEAMI).

Since its opening in 2018, the center has become a safe space for young people, where they can explore how the world around them works, but also learn and experience complex concepts in a fun and memorable way. It offers youth programs in science, education, and health, such as:

  • Hands-on interactive exhibits, workshops, and life skills development
  • Teacher educational support, mentorship, and toolkits
  • ICT activities, including robotics and coding
  • Social and cultural integration
  • Entrepreneurship training
  • Adolescent health clinic
  • Sports activities

“Developing the leaders of tomorrow, by empowering the youth of today” has been the motto of the center since day one. It will continue to assist more young people in finding a way out of poverty and into successful employment, ultimately enabling their communities to thrive.
