Ukraine-related initiatives (in Germany and Ukraine)

In the aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, we stood in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Since February 2022, we have donated to more than 20 initiatives to alleviate the consequences of the war. These initiatives have provided medical care, supplies, protection of cultural heritage in Ukraine, and accommodation and support for refugees, children and university students arriving in Germany. 

Nano Nation  

Established in November 2022, Nano Nation supports Ukrainian refugee children and their parents in Berlin through the Nano’s Kidsclub. The program provides flexible childcare and comprehensive support for parents, with a focus on integration and learning German through play. 

HPI and MIT Collaboration (in Germany and USA)

Using design methodologies to address societal challenges related to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), the Hasso-Plattner-Institute (HPI) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) started a joint new program in November 2022 that drives scientific research at both institutions.  

Through 10-12 joint projects per year and lively exchanges between scientists at both institutes, the “Designing for Sustainability” program focuses on digital technologies, computer science, and innovation. The Foundation supports this new research collaboration, the results of which will be translated into practice, aiming to tackle global challenges especially in the areas of health, education, energy, and climate action. 

Attic Sculptures on City Palace (Potsdam)

Since 2017, the Foundation is supporting the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten with the restoration of selected sculptures on the attic of the State Parliament in Potsdam, the former City Palace. The donation firstly enabled fundamental research on the attic sculptures. A comprehensive photo documentation of the attic sculptures has been produced. Then, sculptors in Berlin/Potsdam and Saxony were commissioned to restore or make copies of the statues.

Three groups were formed which complete the picture of the attic at important points and will make the building appear “alive” again. Due to the support of the Foundation a total number of ten attic sculptures will be back on display at the Landtag.

Kindermuseum – Education Program (Berlin)

The Children’s World ANOHA is more than just a children’s museum. Run by the Jewish Museum Berlin, it is a place that caters to the interest and needs of children between three to twelve years old. It aims to playfully introduce children to important social matters – such as nature conservation, religion and inter-human cohabitation. Young children are encouraged to approach others in an open-minded and respectful way and to be curious towards the new or the unknown. 

The history of Noah’s Ark thereby represents the conceptual and creative starting point to all offerings. The Hasso Plattner Foundation supports the educational programming at the museum. 

Oceana (USA)

Oceana Inc., a US-registered nonprofit organization, is one of the largest international advocacy organizations focused solely on ocean conservation. The organization’s offices around the world allow it to run strategic, directed campaigns that achieve measurable outcomes to maintain or improve the biodiversity of our oceans. The Hasso Plattner Foundation is particularly involved in a project protecting habitats and kelp in Chile’s marine ecosystem.

Solidarity Fund (South Africa)

The Solidarity Fund is a South African public benefit organization initiated by the president, Cyril Ramaphosa. The independently administered Fund was created as a response to the COVID-19 crisis in South Africa. It is a consolidated platform for individuals, the public and private sector to contribute to COVID-19 initiatives.

The Hasso Plattner Foundation already supports various projects in South Africa and other African countries. By means of this donation, the Foundation wants to reaffirm its partnership with South Africa and continue to support it in its time of need.

Notre Dame (France)

The cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris is not only a national monument of France but also a central element of the European culture. Therefore, the Hasso Plattner Foundation quickly decided to support the cathedral’s by means of a donation to the respective fund of the Republic of France after the devastating fire in April 2019. This was also meant as a gesture to underline the European spirit and the French-German friendship in a moment of dismay.

Since the Hasso Plattner Foundation supports projects, organizations and institutions in the fields of science/education, art/culture, social welfare/conservation exclusively on its own initiative within the scope of its statutes, it is generally not possible to support individuals or individual projects. We therefore ask for your understanding if we have to decline requests of this kind.
